VALDOSTA, Ga. - Michelle Thompson's 21 points led Valdosta State past Edward Waters, 64-55, Monday night to move to 1-1 on the season.
After scoring just five points in the first half, Thompson dropped 16 in the second. With 6:30 left in a three-point game, Thompson was the catalyst to drive VSU past Edward Waters. She stole the ball and hit a three-pointer in the corner off an assist from Sierra Nixon, who finished with nine rebounds, six points, three assists, four steals and VSU's only block of the game.
Then Thompson followed it up with a three-point play the hard way on the ensuing possession. Leschelle Matthews passed the ball ahead to Thompson for a fast break lay-up. Jessica Georges of Edward Waters fouled Thompson on the play, and she converted the free throw to give the Lady Blazers a seven-point lead, 51-44. Valdosta State would never lead by less the rest of the night.
Tamika Booker brought down eight rebounds and scored 14 points in the game. Courtney Mitchell brought down six rebounds while two others brought down five to help Valdosta State out rebound the Tigers by 16, 50-34. With the edge in rebounding, VSU dominated in second chance points, 16 to four.
Matthews turned out a balanced performance with seven points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Valdosta State's trademark defense forced 30 turnovers and stole the ball 15 times. The Lady Blazers were able to score 25 points off turnovers and eight on the break.
Ebony Presha led the Tigers in scoring with 15 points, and Tieura Quick added 11. Ashley Hamn finished with nine points and nine rebounds to lead the team. She also notched two blocks while Presha passed for five assists.
Valdosta State will return to action at the P.E. Complex Saturday at 6 p.m. against Eckerd.
