VSU Beats Eckerd with Points in the Post

Valdosta State's four post players scored 35 points

VALDOSTA, Ga. - Valdosta State received stellar post play from Sierra Nixon, Tamika Booker, Brittany Daniels and Courtney Mitchell to lead the team past Eckerd, 59-50. The post players combined for 35 points. The win puts the Lady Blazers at 2-1 before the team's first road trip and drops Eckerd to 1-1 on the year.

Nixon tallied her first double-double at VSU with 10 points and 12 rebounds while Booker scored 10 with eight boards. Nixon added two blocks, two steals and an assist. Booker had a block and a steal. Daniels put in nine points with five rebounds and two steals. Mitchell chipped in six points and four rebounds with a block and a steal.

The foursome helped the Lady Blazers scored 28 points in the paint, nine points off turnovers. Valdosta State also edged out Eckerd on the glass with a 38-36 advantage in rebounding.

Not to be outdone, the guards turned in a solid effort as well. Leschelle Matthews passed out five assists with just one turnover. She also had a steal and a rebound. Sczeny Hartry scored eight points with three assists, two steals and two rebounds. Michelle Thompson scored seven points with four assists and two rebounds. She was four of four from the charity stripe.

In addition to Daniels and Mitchell, the rest of VSU's bench combined for 24 points to Eckerd's mere six points off the bench. Lauren Maples scored four points with a rebound and two steals. Alli Jones scored three and Amanda Haven put in two points.

The Valdosta State defense continued the team's strong defense as the Lady Blazers forced 22 turnovers and registered four blocks and 11 steals on the night.

For Eckerd, Ashley Lutz scored 19 points and brought down six rebounds with three steals. Kati Rausberg pitched in 15 points with three steals and four boards while Jordan Stacey led the team in rebounds with seven.

Valdosta State goes on a four-game road trip with Nova Southeastern on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and Tampa at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. After that VSU will face Georgia Southwestern and Clark Atlanta before returning home to face Albany State at 6 p.m. December 5.
