Blazers Fall 12-0 to Florida Southern

VSU surrenders six home runs in loss

VALDOSTA, Ga. - No. 1 Florida Southern hit six home runs as the Mocs defeated No. 12 Valdosta State 12-0 in non-conference baseball action at Billy Grant Field Sunday afternoon.

Florida Southern (21-2) opened the scoring in the top of the third inning as Trae Gore led off the frame with a home run. Colin Kaline followed with a base hit and scored when Kelvin Clark hit his seventh home run of the year. Wade Kirkland promptly hit the third roundtripper of the inning. After a ground out, Andrew Grutka reached on a two-base error by Jordan Yost in left and moved to third on a second ground out while Tony Mitchell doubled down the leftfield line to plate Grutka. Kyle Gibbs, the ninth man to bat in the inning for Florida Southern followed with a single to center to drive home Mitchell to give FSC a 6-0 advantage.

The Mocs pushed their lead to 7-0 in the third as Clark hit his second home run of the game while Valdosta State (18-8) squandered a scoring chance in the sixth. The Blazers loaded the bases with no outs in the frame and had the middle of their order batting, but a pair of strike outs via swinging and a strikeout looking ended the threat.

Mitchell added an RBI single for Florida Southern in the seventh while Gore hit his second home run of the game and Clark added his third in the eighth. Drew Morgan closed out the scoring with a RBI single in the ninth.

Florida Southern starter Eddie Sipple scattered six hits while striking out 11 batters in seven innings to improve to 5-0. Meanwhile, Jeremy Forbus fell to 3-1 for VSU after allowing nine hits and seven runs in five innings.

Valdosta State returns to action Tuesday, March 16 when it plays a doubleheader at Henderson State in Arkadelphia, Ark. The first game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. Eastern first pitch.
