Blazers Claim Championship

Valdosta State wins Small College Blue & Gray Invitational

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Valdosta State won the Small College Blue & Gray Invitational in Montgomery, Ala., Saturday. To claim the championship, VSU had to beat the hometown Auburn-Montgomery.

The Blazers pulled it out, 6-1. Valdosta State jumped out early with three wins in doubles action. Philip Pakebusch and Michael Kuech won, 8-5, in the top spot while Otto Lenhart and Frank Sickman won, 8-6 in the third position. The most lopsided win in doubles came at the second position where Daniel Dueren and Christian Hansen won, 8-2.

Valdosta State only needed to win two singles matches to secure the win, but tallied three. In the second and third spots, Dueren and Hansen won 4-6, 6-2 (5) and 6-1, 6-2 respectively. Konstantin Kutschenko then took the win in the fifth position with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

The only point Auburn-Montgomery could muster came in top singles where Pakebusch fell, 6-1, 6-2.
