Lady Blazers fall 7-2 to AASU
VSU struggles in single play
VALDOSTA, Ga. - No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic claimed all six singles points as the Lady Pirates defeated No. 6 Valdosta State 7-2 in women's tennis action at the VSU tennis courts Saturday.
The Lady Blazers raced out to a 2-1 lead after doubles plays as they claimed victory at No. 1 and No. 3. At the first position, No. 7 Natali Gumbrecht and Hollie Bees topped No. 3 Martina Beckman and Alida Muller-Wehlau 8-4 while Dominique Rothlaender and Sonya Haggstrom also claimed an 8-4 win over No. 21 Tina Ronel and Kathleen Henry at No. 3. Fourth-ranked Sona Novakova and Gabriella Kovacs earned the only AASU point in doubles play as they defeated Raphaelle Durante and Tina Trautmann 8-4 at No. 2.
No. 2 Novakova defeated No. 6 Gumbrecht 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while fourth-ranked Muller-Wehlau topped No. 17 Durante 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. No. 21 Kovacs claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Rothlaender at No. 4 and No. 41 Kathleen Henry defeated Haggstrom 7-6, 6-0 at No. 6 while No. 27 Beckman claimed a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 win over Bees at No. 5. No. 19 Ronel closed out the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Trautmann at No. 3.
Valdosta State falls to 10-4 while Armstrong Atlantic improves to 24-0.
Valdosta State returns to action Saturday, April 17 when it opens play in the Gulf South Conference Tournament in Montgomery, Ala.
