FLORENCE, Ala. - Brett Kennedy scattered four hits while Valdosta State collected 15 on the day as the Blazers blanked North Alabama 14-0 in seven innings in Gulf South Conference baseball action at Cole Field Sunday afternoon.
Kennedy gave up just two hits through the first six innings, during which he allowed just five batters to reach base. The junior picked walked one batter and hit two while striking out nine hitters as he recorded is fifth complete game of the year while improving to 6-3.
Valdosta State (31-12, 9-3) opened the scoring in the second inning as it plated six runs as it batted around in the frame. With one out, Jon Koenigsfeld was hit by a pitch and moved to third when Josh Vining followed with a base hit. A wild pitch allowed Vining to move up a base before Chris Jones delivered a single to plate Koenigsfeld. Ryan Danbury also singled to drive home Vining while an Antonio Clark base hit scored Jones. After a strike out, Clayton Cain drove home Danbury with a single and Austin Smith plated Clark with a base hit. Smith got caught in a run down while trying to steal second, but Cain was able to score on the play to give VSU a 6-0 lead.
Three North Alabama errors in the fourth inning allowed the Blazers to add three more runs to their lead while Brandon Decker doubled and scored on a Jake Summers sacrifice fly in the sixth to push the advantage to 10-0. Clark closed out the scoring in the seventh inning as he hit a grand slam for his first career home run.
Clark finished the day with three hits and five RBI to lead VSU offensively while Vining also tallied three hits. Decker, Cain and Jones all finished with two hits each.
Valdosta State returns to action Wednesday, April 14 when it hosts Georgia College at Billy Grant Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
