Carter, Johnson Sweep GSC Players of the Week
Johnson earns first Player of the Week, Carter notches second in a row
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After sweeping Albany State, conference rival West Georgia and No. 12 Alabama-Huntsville, Valdosta State swept the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week awards.
Morgan Johnson claimed the Player of the Week award for her first one of the season while Margaret Carter earned her second consecutive Pitcher of the Week award.
Johnson blew up this past week with a .733 batting average, .778 on-base percentage and a 1.467 slugging percentage to earn her first Player of the Week award of the season. Johnson notched three home runs, 11 hits, eight RBIs and four runs with three walks on the week. Of her 11 hits, five were for extra bases as Johnson tallied five multi-hit games.
Johnson%u2019s hits were timely as well. She hit the winning two RBIs to close out West Georgia by run rule. She blasted a two-run shot against West Georgia in game two to complete a five-run inning for the Lady Blazers. Then Johnson hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning of game one against Alabama-Huntsville to help secure a 7-4 victory over the Chargers. She was a perfect two for two with a walk in game two.
Carter completed a three-game shutout streak this past week when she completed her second no-hitter against Albany State and kept West Georgia from scoring. She was 3-0 on the week with a 0.78 earned run average. In three games, teams notched only 11 hits while Carter struck out 21 batters, walked two and only allowed two runs.
Carter and Johnson combine for VSU's seventh and eighth GSC Player of the Week awards. Carter has one more in addition to this week's while her pitching companion, Holly Satterfield, has two awards this season. Heavy hitters Marti Littlefield (two) and Alyssa Shirey have combined to garner the honor three times so far this season.
