VSU Tennis Cleans Up
Blazers, Lady Blazers Combine for 11 GSC Awards
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Valdosta State's Gulf South Conference Championship tennis teams cleaned up this season with 11 Gulf South Conference awards, led by Head Coach John Hansen, winner of GSC Coach of the Year honors for both men's and women's tennis.
In addition to Hansen, Philip Pakebusch and Natali Gumbrecht won GSC Player of the Year awards. Gumbrecht is just the third player in history to claim back-to-back GSC East Division Player of the Year honors and just the fourth to earn the award twice in a career. Gumbrecht claims VSU's 10th Player of the Year award on the women's side. Pakebusch earns the 11th such award on the men's side as he led VSU to back-to-back GSC Championships.
Gumbrecht earns GSC honors for the fourth consecutive season, all first-team but one. In 2008 she made the second team. She is joined on the All-GSC first squad by Raphaelle Durante and Tina Trautmann. Durante is the 11th player all-time to make the first team in all four seasons. Trautmann earns her third All-GSC honor, first team in 2009 and second team in 2008. Hollie Bees represented VSU on the All-GSC second team for her first such honor.
The men nearly matched the women with three players earning GSC honors. Along with Pakebusch was Daniel Dueren and Christian Hansen. Dueren makes his second consecutive All-GSC team while 2010 marks Pakebusch and Hansen's first time on the squad.
