VSU Falls in 12-inning Marathon

Arkansas-Monticello Scores Four Runs in 12th to Beat VSU, 5-1

VALDOSTA, Ga. - Softball fans received their money's worth at the NCAA Division II Softball South Super Regional Friday night. Valdosta State and Arkansas-Monticello each scored one run in the first two innings, and then went scoreless until the top of the 12th.

The Cotton Blossoms made contact on five hits, one of which was a home run by Sarah Hayslip, for four 12th inning runs to take a 5-1 lead. Arkansas-Monticello's ace, Kayla Jackson, retired three batters in four tries to drop Valdosta State to 46-8 on the season. The Cotton Blossoms move to 55-11 with the win.

Both teams put up a combined 23 hits, 15 for UAM and eight for VSU while both teams left a combined 21 runners on base (10 for VSU, 11 for UAM). However, both Jackson and Holly Satterfield did plenty of work.

Satterfield finished with five strikeouts in 11.2 innings of play. She gave up 14 hits and just one run through 11 innings. Jackson also struck out five and walked two in 12 innings. She gave up eight hits and no earned runs.

The only Lady Blazer with multiple hits was Amber Shaw. She finished two for six. Six others registered a hit throughout the marathon game. Marti Littlefield scored VSU's lone run in the game in the first inning.

Arkansas-Monticello bounced back in the second with a solo home run from UAM right fielder Sarah Hayslip. She was three for five on the day with three RBIs. Her second home run of the day, and 17th of the year, came in the top of the 12th to ice the game.

Randa Perry singled to start the 12th and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Katie Bowman then singled to left field and pushed for second base. Morgan Johnson hurled the ball to second and looked to get it there in time, but, somehow, Bowman got under the tag.

After that, Jackson hit a fly ball to deep center. Melessa Jackson made the catch but had no chance to catch Perry running from third.

After the go ahead run, UAM went for more. Becca Tipton, on a four for six night, singled to left center to score Bowman. Then Hayslip went deep to cap the scoring at 5-1.

Valdosta State will have to win both games Saturday for the second week in a row to avoid elimination. The two teams will meet again at 1 p.m. Saturday and a third game will be played, if necessary, 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game of the day.
